On the ArtRage Vitae it’s smoother than ever on a tablet.Ī variety of color picker options are there to help, from traditional artist colors to a neat wheelbarrow sitting in the corner. You can simply load the canvas and brush and play with the thick paint Smearing, pushing and blending to create textured sketches and paintings. Standard brushes include oil, watercolor, and airbrushes, as well as a cute palette knife, which sought to be messed with and used for creating a mix of edge textures and painting blends.ĪrtRage’s strengths generally have always been the pick-up-and-paint approach to digital art. The real joy of ArtRage comes on canvas, and here the Vitae has been refined rather than overhauled. The ArtRage Vitae is a lot of fun to use (Image Credit: Ian Dean) Everything can be saved (which can be shared with friends) in customized color-mix resources to create a menu of blending profiles. Clearly this version of ArtRage has been designed to appeal to studios and artists looking to collaborate.ĪrtRage Vitae also adds a new complimentary color picker that, as the name suggests, delivers colors that compliment your palette. This new feature can be combined with the tile-canvas feature – paint seamlessly across the edges of the canvas to create infinite painting or texture – to give the ArtRage Vita a new professional edge. Paint seamlessly across the edges of the canvas to create infinite paintings or textures You can also share your favorites, tools and color palette to a friend. These are here to smooth out the rough edges of ArtRage and this version makes it even easier to jump in and start painting.Ī great new feature is PaintLink which enables you and a friend to collaborate on the same painting in real time. Arterage Vitae review: new featuresĪrtRage Vitae now includes collaboration tools (Image Credit: Ian Dean)ĪrtRage Vitae has some cool new ideas but like I mentioned above many of them are hidden or subtly introduced. If you’re used to more traditional UIs, such as those in Photoshop or Rebelle, you might find it limited. I love it, but I’ve been using it since ArtRage 3 so I’m used to the big and chunky look. With all this said, ArtRage’s UI may not be for everyone. There’s a small learning curve because ArtRage has its own naming conventions for some common tools, and it can take time to figure out how to create its actual paint simulation. The streamlined look means more space is given on the canvas, and you rarely feel like painting takes up too much space on the menu. But its UI is one of the best for newcomers, as it hides a lot of its depth behind sliders and easily-clicked palettes and drop-down lists. In fact, there are many new features behind the scenes designed to bring the software up to date without compromising ease of use, which ArtRage is known for. Some might criticize that chunky UI that hasn’t really changed since the iPad was released 18 years ago, but this version of ArtRage has a homey, strong feel. The UI is bold and chunky but very easy to use (Image Credit: Ian Dean)įor this review I’m using an older Wacom Studio tablet running Windows 11, and the ArtRage Vitae is a surprisingly smooth experience. Plus I’m using the rival app Rebel 5, which is closer to the ArtRage Vita in features and paint simulation, although it’s more expensive. If you’re thinking about buying the ArtRage Vitae, you can take a look at our guide to the best drawing tablet as well as our list of the best software for digital artists.įor this review I have been using ArtRage Vitae for several months, working on various paintings and even NFT art. The ArtRage Vitae mainline version replaces ArtRage 6 and aims to replace the painting app with a host of new features designed to appeal to studios from mobile and tablet devices and on desktop – including new collaboration, sharing and recording. Many new features designed to captivate the studio You can pick it up through the developer’s website. But for those apps costing you more money, the ArtRage Vitae remains an affordable buy – the Mac and PC versions are $80 / £80, while the iPad and Android versions are only $4.99 / £3.49. There’s a lot of competition in ArtRage these days, not least from more robust and feature-rich software like Corel Painter 2022 and Rebelle 5. Its rendering and imitation of real oils and watercolors has always been one of the best. The joy of ArtRage has always been its simplicity and accessible toolset. ArtRage Vitae is the newest version of one of the oldest digital painting apps that found its fans on the iPad when plein air painting started taking flight.
